With the Fourth Industrial Revolution already upon us, technology today is changing the way we live and work faster than ever. While educational institutions continue to revamp their curricula to better adapt graduates to the rapidly-changing working landscape, many argue that corporations should also play a more prominent role in preparing the young talents for the future of work. This will involve developing digital leadership among the youths, which requires mental agility, data-driven skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
CIMB is doing just that by focusing their youth development agenda on empowering talents and developing future leaders from across Southeast Asia. As one of ASEAN’s leading universal banking groups, CIMB wants to change the way we define talent recruitment and capability development through their latest initiative called the CIMB 3D Conquest.
Discovering Budding Data Wizards, Coding Ninjas and Digital Disruptors
Running on three tracks – Data Science, FinTech and Coding – the 3D Conquest was organised to identify the region’s young digital talents as part of CIMB’s contribution towards ASEAN’s future development. The inaugural regional CIMB initiative had a total of 715 teams registered when it was first launched in September 2018, of which only 35 winning teams were shortlisted to participate in the Grand Finale at Kuala Lumpur in January 2019.
After going through 24-hours of working on building predictive data models, reimagining banking solutions, and revamping mobile payment systems at the Grand Finale challenge, a total of nine teams (3 from each track) were selected as the Grand Winners.
Following the huge success, Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Aziz, Group CEO of CIMB Group, announced that the 3D Conquest will be made an annual event to enable more ASEAN talents to be a part of this amazing journey. This means if you missed the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural 3D Conquest, you will have another chance to join the upcoming 2019 competition.
With that in mind, if you are savvy in digital technology and data science, or if you are brimming with innovative ideas on how to disrupt banking behaviour, here are four reasons why you should participate in the next CIMB 3D Conquest!
1. Network with driven and ambitious individuals from across the Southeast Asia region
Let’s face it, the opportunity to network with hundreds of highly ambitious individuals from over 5 countries doesn’t come very often. With international participants hailing from countries like Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, the 3D Conquest is a great avenue for you to build long-term relationships with our regional peers that can prove to be useful throughout the course of your professional career.
Networking will help you make new friends, stay on top of the latest trends, meet prospective mentors, keep a pulse on the job market, and even gain access to the relevant resources that will foster your career development in the future.
2. Work on real challenges that can pave way for the future of the banking industry
Have you ever aspired to be an entrepreneur and develop your own innovative digital app or product? If the answer is yes, then the 3D Conquest can be an excellent platform for you to hone your entrepreneurial skills and put your creative mind to the test. The complex tasks and business cases put forth by the CIMB team during the competition is based on actual challenges faced by conventional banks to simulate a more realistic environment for the participants.
Through the 3D Conquest, participants will not only develop a better understanding of the banking industry in the digital age, but also learn to develop working concepts and prototypes to bring their ideas to life.
3. Gain world-class mentorship from industry experts and exposure to a fast-paced work environment
Throughout the 3D Conquest, participants were given an immersive experience, from meeting the inspiring CIMB leaders to working with their project teams to develop innovative solutions that can address the problem statements. As part of the hackathon experience, the competition also included a range of entrepreneurial activities to simulate an actual startup environment for the participants.
During the 2-day hackathon-style competition, the teams were given the opportunity to be mentored by CIMB managers and subject matter experts from their technology partners – Cloudera and Fusionex for the Data Science track, SAS Malaysia and Amazon Web Services for FinTech and Oracle Malaysia for Coding. So, if you have always wanted to explore a career in the technology or digital space, the 3D Conquest is great platform for you to develop in-depth digital skills that will push you ahead of your peers.
4. Stand a chance to win lucrative cash prizes, a trip to Silicon Valley, and an employment opportunity with CIMB
Finally, a CIMB event cannot be complete without amazing prizes for the regional winners. At the end of the inaugural 3D Conquest, each Regional Champion team was rewarded with USD8,000, while the first runner-up and second runner-up teams walked away with USD5,000 and USD3,000 respectively.
As the icing on the cake, the three regional champions received a trip to Silicon Valley for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the global startup hub in the U.S. – definitely a dream come true, especially for aspiring entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts. And that’s not all, all the finalists will be offered a job with CIMB!
Ultimately, the CIMB 3D Conquest aims to help develop a robust pipeline of digitally-groomed talent as part of their commitment to develop leaders of tomorrow in Southeast Asia. “More than 50% of ASEAN’s youth is under-30, and CIMB believes in equipping them with the right digital competencies now, ASEAN could later tap into this deep digital talent pool to help realise the region’s true economic potential,” said Dato’ Hamidah Naziadin, Group Chief People Officer of CIMB Group.
