Obtaining a university degree is important and many graduates have found studying for a degree to be a deeply rewarding journey. Out of the many areas of study to choose from, a degree in business and finance is highly sought after by employers, both in Malaysia and around the world.
At the University of Reading Malaysia, Henley Business School has partnered with ICAEW, a world-leading professional organisation for Chartered Accountants to established a unique programme in finance, accounting & business. Known as the Henley-ICAEW Programme (HIP), the four-year career-focused curriculum provides students with a UK honours degree-level education in business and finance, as well as the ICAEW Business and Finance Professional (ICAEW BFP) designation. It is worth noting that to pursue HIP, you don’t need to have an accounting background or accounts study experience.
Here are 4 reasons you should pursue the Henley-ICAEW Programme at the Henley Business School and kick-start your journey in business & finance:
1. One Programme, Two Recognitions
Students who successfully complete the Henley-ICAEW Programme will obtain a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Accounting & Finance, with honours, as well as a professional designation. The ICAEW Business and Finance Professional (BFP) is a globally respected designation that recognises professionals who have gained fundamental business knowledge, skills and work experience. You will be able to use the letters ‘BFP’ after your name and enjoy access to specialist management & personal development content.
With the ICAEW BFP and a BSc Accounting & Finance degree, HIP graduates will have a competitive edge amongst their peers in the field of business.
2. Accreditation from 2 Prestigious UK Institutions – ICAEW and University of Reading
Henley Business School has a prestigious academic history. Established in 1945, Henley Business School was the first business school to be established in the UK and is one of the oldest business schools in Europe. It has been consistently ranked amongst the top 50 business schools in the world, and today, Henley Business School has an unmistakable international reach. At the Johor campus, students will benefit from the diverse experience of Henley’s 150 faculty that hail from 18 countries; as well as 5,000 fellow students whose backgrounds comprise 100 nationalities.
The ICAEW BFP designation is conferred by one of the most recognised and influential accountancy bodies in the international business community. Founded in 1880 and incorporated by Royal Charter, there are over 150,000 ICAEW chartered accountants globally. ICAEW Chartered Accountants work at the highest level of the world’s largest organisations as finance directors, CEOs, partners, and advisers.
3. Flexibility to Transfer to the UK for an International Experience
As the first multi-discipline overseas campus of the University of Reading in the UK, the University of Reading Malaysia offers a great opportunity for students on both campuses to undertake student mobility. In the second year of the HIP, students from the Malaysia campus can participate in the university’s mobility programme and study in England.
This exciting opportunity provides an enriching academic experience, enabling students to collaborate with fellow peers from diverse backgrounds, engage with innovative learning methods, and improve their spoken English. The mobility programme will also provide avenues for students to build their self-confidence, independence, and cultural awareness. These are personal skills that empower leadership traits and are highly valued by employers.
4. High Employability with Leading Companies
In Year 3 of study, students will be immersed in a full work placement as an integral component of HIP, known as the Industry Placement Experience. Students will undergo 12 months of full-time employment with an ICAEW Authorised Training Employer (ATE). There are more than 180 ATEs in Malaysia comprising professional services firms and practices, multi-national corporations as well as government-linked companies.
The Industry Placement Experience equips students with hands-on professional experience and develops skills that are immediately transferable to the real-world business environment. HIP integrates both practical work experience and a critical grasp of core theory & analytical skills into the programme’s modules; these help students build their professional leadership. As a result, it is no surprise that many students are offered highly desirable jobs by employers – even before they graduate!
5. Fast-Tracked Pathway to Chartered Accountancy
Upon completion of the HIP, students will have the opportunity to fast-track their path to the ICAEW Chartered Accountant qualification (ICAEW ACA). By the time students graduate from Henley Business School, they will already have satisfied the following ICAEW ACA components:
- 1/3 of the practical work experience requirement;
- The Ethics & Professional Skepticism component;
- 8 out of 15 modules of the ICAEW ACA study programme.
In terms of finances, students will enjoy the added benefit of approximately £1,000 in waivers for exam and registration fees to complete the remaining modules of the ICAEW ACA. HIP enables students to potentially obtain the ICAEW ACA much faster than the traditional route of first completing their degree studies.
